Estimate the number of Dairy Milk bars eaten in India per day. (Word Limit: 500) (non-graded)
We will need:
- Penetration percentage of Dairy Milk in India (they are current market leaders, let’s assume 40%)
- Population of India - 1.4 billion. Urban and rural split is 30:70
- Total population consuming chocolate:
- Let’s split the consumption by age group and also by urban and rural
- Age 0 to 4: Babies from 0 to 1 can’t, and only in moderation from 1 onwards. Let’s assume 1% for both urban and rural
- (1400 million x 0.7 x 0.01) + (1400 million x 0.3 x 0.01) = 14 million
- Age 5 to 14: Urban - 30%, and rural - 20%
- (1400 million x 0.3 x 0.3) + (1400 million x 0.7 x 0.2) = 322 million
- Age 15 to 35: Urban - 20%, and rural - 10%
- (1400 million x 0.3 x 0.2) + (1400 million x 0.7 x 0.1) = 182 million
- Age 35 and above: Urban - 2%, and rural - 1%
- (1400 million x 0.3 x 0.02) + (1400 million x 0.7 x 0.01) = 18.2 million ~ 18 million
- Age 0 to 4: Babies from 0 to 1 can’t, and only in moderation from 1 onwards. Let’s assume 1% for both urban and rural
- Total population = 14 + 322 + 182 + 18 = 536 million
- Let’s split the consumption by age group and also by urban and rural
- Let’s assume an average consumption of 150 gms of chocolate per capita in India, and the weight of one Dairy Milk bar to be 30g
- Amount of chocolate consumed = 536 million x 150g = 80400 million g ~ 80 billion g
- Amount of Dairy Milk consumed = penetration percentage x chocolate consumed = 40% x 80 billion g = 32 billion g of Dairy Milk
- Amount of Dairy Milk bars per day = 32 billion g / (30 g * 365) = 2.9 million ~ 3 million
