So far, you have learnt about surveys as a method of conducting user research. You learnt how to create questions for a survey and, more importantly, how to analyse the data collected through surveys.

So, let’s put everything you have learnt into practice by going through some sample surveys to understand how surveys work and learn about some of the best practices to conduct surveys.

Let’s say that we are creating a new music streaming service for Indian users. This would compete with existing music streams services - Gaana, Wynk, JioSaavan, YouTube Music, Apple Music, Amazon Prime Music, and Spotify.

The key differentiators would be:

  • Hypothesis 1 - People listen to different types of music depending on their moods, and hence designing a mood based music recommendation service would be a unique value proposition.
  • Hypothesis 2 - Majority of Indians with smartphones would prefer a music streaming service with ads compared to a paying a monthly service fee.

As per the hypotheses, it is clear that we are looking at how many people and their level of preferences. So, a quantitative method would be appropriate. The product is in the discovery or strategy phase of the lifecycle. We want to capture users attitudes towards mood based music and ads. Hence, surveys would be the appropriate choice.

Target Segment: Users with smartphones and 4G networks.

Several of our target segment will be on social media services, hence it would be ideal to administer the survey through social media channels.
